Buying Xbox secondhand
- The onboard clock capacitor leaks and eats the motherboard — on an unopened console it is a question of when, not whether. Removing it costs nothing and only loses the clock.
- Original controllers ('Duke') and the later S are both fine; the Duke is bulkier and increasingly collectible.
- The hard drive is locked to the motherboard, so a swapped drive without the right key means a console that will not boot.
Choose your copy
Start with the photos and description of the exact piece. Loose copies suit a playing collection; if you collect boxes and manuals too, check the listed contents before buying. Edition names alone don’t tell you what is included.
For Xbox games, compare the platform and region printed on the case or cartridge with your system. Treat download codes and bonus content as unavailable unless the listing says otherwise.
